Detroit Diesel produces one millionth HDEP engine

Anniversary motor assembled at the DD plant in Redford, Michigan

The HDEP Detroit Diesel product family combines the DD13, DD15 and DD16 engines, which are designed for heavy duty applications. Introduced in 2007, HDEP engines were jointly developed in Germany, Japan and the USA. Detroit Diesel HDEP engines are also built in Mannheim, Germany.

In Redford, USA, the Detroit plant has been producing engines since 1938. It was here that the millionth HDEP motor was assembled in December 2022.

“Detroit has been manufacturing world-class modern engines using cutting-edge technology for over 84 years,” said Matt Pfaffenbach, Detroit Operations Manager. “Our heavy-duty engines deliver the best fuel economy, reliability and durability for millions of miles.”

Detroit Diesel is the only manufacturer in the industry that assembles 16-liter engines and supplies them to on-highway and commercial customers. Based on industry leading achievements, DD maintains a standard of 5% reduction in fuel consumption every two to three years.

As of August 2022, Detroit Diesel’s Grade 8 truck product share was 41.1%. The popularity of Detroit ICEs is due to the high technology of engines, which really help heavy trucks reduce emissions and thus make the environment cleaner.

To celebrate the release of the millionth HDEP engine, a celebration was organized on the Redford campus to honor all the workers who helped achieve the new milestone.
